Chemical Grade Definitions

Columbus Chemical Industries provides materials to specification, offering:

  • Chemicals certified to meet industry defined standard specifications, definitions as detailed below
  • Multi-compendial items, meeting more than one industry defined monograph
  • Custom chemical specifications
  • Combination customized + standardized specifications, meeting your unique testing requirements in addition to the industry standard specifications your process requires
  • Solutions made to specification can also be certified as prepared with raw materials meeting any of the above conditions

Common chemical grades and explanations:

Krystal Pure: Developed by CCI, the Krystal Pure product line targets meeting common requirements in the Electronics industry for most metals in the 5-50 ppb max range. Variations exist within the Krystal Pure product line for lower limits in 1-5 ppb max limits as well.

SEMI: Meets rigorous Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International specs, providing ultra-high purity for electronics and microchip manufacturing.

HPLC: Specially purified for High-Performance Liquid Chromatography, ensuring low impurities for accurate analytical separations.

Ultra-Pure: Exceptional purity levels for cutting-edge applications like semiconductor manufacturing and nanotechnology.

ACS: Certified to meet or exceed American Chemical Society standards, offering ≥95% purity for precise lab work, quality control, and research applications.

Reagent: High-purity option (often ≥95%), versatile for lab analysis and experiments, typically comparable to ACS methods and limits when no specific ACS monograph exists for the material.

USP: Matches United States Pharmacopeia benchmarks, commonly required for pharmaceuticals, food, and medicinal uses with strict purity and safety compliance standards. Products may also be certified against additional Pharmacopeia requirements, such as BP (British Pharmacopeia), EP (European Pharmacopeia), or JP (Japanese Pharmacopeia).

NF: Complies with National Formulary standards, ensuring high purity for pharmaceutical and excipient production, often comparable to USP requirements.

FCC: Adheres to Food Chemicals Codex standards, guaranteeing safety and purity for food related production needs.

Food Grade: Comparable to FCC type handling and specification requirements for food related production needs.

Lab Grade: Reliable purity for educational labs and non-critical experiments, though exact impurity levels aren’t specified.

Purified Grade: Practical, good-quality option with no official standard, suited for general use but not for regulated industries.

Technical Grade: Cost-effective purity for industrial applications, ensuring reliable performance in large-scale processes. Not suitable for food, drug, or high-precision lab applications.
