Fine chemicals are materials that are described to an exacting specification and are often the building blocks or raw materials for specialty chemicals.
Fine Chemical Specifications
Many fine chemical specifications are authored by industry-specific recognized authoritative bodies, such as the US Pharmacopeia (USP) or the Food Chemical Codex (FCC). The resulting chemical specification, or monograph, provides the standard requirements for chemicals intended for use in industry related applications.
The chemical monographs are defined uniquely per chemical, and often depict certain purity levels and properties for that chemical, such as:
- Assay
- Critical trace metals and anions, with maximum limits
- Presence of water, with acceptable H2O % range or maximum
- Handling certificates or criteria (i.e. Kosher; cGMP utilization for USP, FCC, NF certifications;)
- Miscellaneous other requirements, specific to the end use

Many industries requiring fine chemicals are highly sensitive to change and are typically included in our top tier of change control and notification. We work closely with our worldwide supply chain to ensure planned changes are reported in advance, allowing appropriate time for review and any necessary change implementation tasks.
